Motorists not permitted to honk unnecessarily in Mauritius – Neptune

Popular disc jockey, Imohiosen Patrick, aka DJ Neptune, speaks to JOY MARCUS about his trip to Mauritius

What country did you have your most memorable experience?

I had a wonderful time in Mauritius.

When and why did you travel there?

I travelled to the country in 2015 for work.

Where did you stay?

I stayed in a resort. It was very nice and close to the Indian Ocean. I enjoyed every moment looking at the ocean.

Did you travel alone?

Yes, I did.

What was the first thing that fascinated you when you got there?

The reception I got was quite impressive; maybe it was because I went for an event.  I noticed that Mauritius’ capital city, Port Louis, is a town with a few people but everything is so organised. I don’t think they are up to a million in terms of population but they have done well for themselves.

Did you taste any of their local foods?

No, I didn’t get the opportunity to do that. I only ate intercontinental dishes.

How long did you stay there?

Sadly, I only stayed for a few days because I had a busy schedule. However, the country is very fascinating and is a good place for vacation.

What did you observe about their culture?

They are surrounded by the Indian Ocean and I think they like fishing as well. They also dress like Indians.

Were the people nice towards you?

Yes, they were. The people at the resort were very welcoming; so, I want to assume that the people in town are very cool people too.

If you could import anything from Mauritius to Nigeria, what would it be?

I would say the calmness of the town because Nigeria, especially Lagos, is too busy. Everybody in Nigeria is in a rush. I love the Mauritian’s environment because they take their time in whatever they do.

How was the weather while you were there?

The weather was calm and normal. It wasn’t too hot and it wasn’t too cold.

What do you think Nigeria can learn from the country?

Nigeria should learn how to pay more attention to tourism. Mauritius makes a lot of money from it and I believe that we have a lot of nice places in this country that can be explored for that purpose.

In terms of security, how would you compare Mauritius to Nigeria?

They are very strict with their rules and regulations. I remember the driver who drove me around told me that one is not allowed to honk unnecessarily. You must obey traffic rules and their government also provides transportation for students and people above 60.

Did anything remind you of Nigeria while you were there?

I will be honest – nothing reminded me of Nigeria. The resort I stayed was very peaceful. I came out that evening, did my job and went back to my hotel. When I woke up the next morning, I came out of my hotel and enjoyed the view of the ocean and the beautiful trees. Everything was peaceful and calm which made me relaxed. It is a nice place to think and meditate.

How would you compare our entertainment industry with theirs?

You can’t compare because our entertainment industry is way ahead.

What other countries would you like to travel to?

I want to travel to the Bahamas because I heard it is a nice place. I will also like to go to Jamaica to have a feel of the Jamaican vibe, culture and all the madness over there.

What advice would you give to somebody who wants to travel?

If you are thinking of travelling, firstly, use the Internet because it is your friend. Find out about the weather where you are going to so that you will know the right things to pack. Also, find out some things about the culture so you will have a great trip.
