In his State of the Union address on September 13, Jean-Claude Juncker placed prime focus on the Union's trade agenda – to continue signing new trade agreements, for instance, to open trade negotiations with Australia and New Zealand, and strengthen public engagement in trade-related matters.

Latvian Foreign Ministry's parliamentary secretary Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica supported the priorities set by the European Commission.

The Parliamentary Secretary noted that the signing of new EU trade agreements is needed to give our businesses an easier access to new export markets and improve trade conditions in third countries. She also expressed hope that trade negotiations between the EU and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) countries will soon be concluded.

Kalnina-Lukasevica underlined the necessity of strengthening the multilateral trading system and the WTO, and the pivotal role to be played in this by the outcomes of the WTO's 11th Ministerial Conference. At this point, it is clear that a more active engagement by WTO members is needed in order to reach an agreement at the ministerial on practical initiatives such as a regulatory framework for fisheries and e-commerce.
