The European Union announced €1.2 billion for investment in Moldova as part of the Eastern Partnership Economic and Investment Plan (EIP)

The European Union announced €1.2 billion for investment in Moldova as part of the Eastern Partnership Economic and Investment Plan (EIP). This initiative, which includes €365 million in grants, represents substantial support for socio-economic development and the reforms’ implementation in the country.

The Minister of Economic Development and Digitisation, Dumitru Alaiba, stressed the importance of the partnership between the EU and the Republic of Moldova, noting that the EU is the main development partner and the largest donor of financial assistance. The funding and technical assistance provided by the EU through various instruments, such as the Neighbourhood Instrument, development cooperation, and international cooperation, supports Moldova’s reform and development efforts.

In a context marked by the gas crisis in autumn 2021 and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the EU provided a macro-financial assistance package for Moldova in April 2022. This package is available from 2022-2024. It will support the country’s reform agenda, focusing on the economy, institutions, the rule of law, security, environmental and climate sustainability, digital transformation, gender equality, and social inclusion.

Through the EIP, launched in 2021, the EU aims to mobilize up to €17 billion by 2027 in cooperation with international financial institutions. In the case of Moldova, the EU has already managed to mobilize €1.2 billion in investments, including grants worth €365 million.

In addition, the EU SME project, which allocates €8 million in non-reimbursable funds to support entrepreneurship, is another example of the EU’s commitment to strengthening the business environment and improving the investment climate in Moldova.

Through initiatives such as joining the Single Market Program and the Digital Europe Programme, the Republic of Moldova benefits from access to programs and funds worth billions of euros in digitization, research, and innovation, thus supporting the modernization and sustainable development of the country.

In the context of this broad collaboration, the launch of the “Partnership Platform for the Republic of Moldova” is another concerted effort to support Moldova in implementing the reforms needed to modernize the state and strengthen its institutions in the face of challenges.
