Uganda’s president Mr. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and first lady Mrs. Janet Kataha Museveni are expected to grace the opening ceremony of the 16th edition of the East Africa Secondary Schools Association (EASSA).

Speaking in Nairobi during the launch of the games on Tuesday morning, the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Association (FEASSA) President Mr. Justus Mugisha was optimistic that this year’s games will be an eye catcher as the federation boasts of now having 21 different sports.

“We are going to have these games in Gulu, the northern town of Uganda. It’s a former war ravaged town and quiet remote, but I am happy to see how Ugandans are embracing this idea and are ready to host our visitors from across East Africa. We also have prepared well and done several inspections to make sure that our visitors will be comfortable because we are expecting lots of students to participate in 21 different disciplines. This great event will also be graced by our president Yoweri Museveni and his wife Janet Museveni,” said Mr. Mugisha.

The secondary school games are set to begin on the 19th to the 27th of August.

“Gulu is a remote area, but we have tried to refurbish and build more facilities that will not only host these games, but also be used in future to nurture talent from the area. We have refurbished Peche Stadium and it’s now ready for football matches. Other venues will be Sacred Hearts, Kaunda grounds and St Joseph Laidi where we have a brand new swimming pool,” added Mugisha.

Winners of the week-long event will be awarded trophies and medals. There will also be scholarship programs for outstanding sportsmen and women.

“We are trying our best to see that our talents do not go to waste. I think the biggest prize to any student here is the university scholarships from our partners Strathmore College in Nairobi. They have their teams of both men and women participating in Kenya’s first and second tier leagues in different disciplines. This offers our young men and women a rare opportunity to excel in both academics and sports,” Mr. Peter Wesonga who is the marketing manager at Brookside said.

The event has also received a sponsorship kit worth 35 million Kenya shillings from the milk company. “This is the ninth time in nine years we are sponsoring this event. Our aim is to see growth and development of sports among schools in East African region. It is my hope that this kitty will cater for administrative work and better the sporting infrastructures currently at hand that will serve us for decades to come and in future develop sports in general,” Wesonga summarized his speech.
